“Temporary” is one of the most emotional and impactful songs on Eminem’s new album. Skylar Grey, who co-wrote and recorded it with Marshall, explains what the song means to her.
Skylar hinted at her collaboration with Eminem on “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” before the album dropped, and fans quickly deciphered her clues, realising that “Temporary” would be the track she added her efforts to. They were right. But they couldn’t know how deeply personal the song would be. Some already call it a sequel to “Mockingbird”, and it is easy to see why. In the song, Marshall talks to his daughter about his mortality and encourages her to keep moving forward and take care of the family when he’s gone.
Yes, ‘Temporary’ may not be the sunniest of topics, but it’s exactly the kind of emotional terrain Skylar Grey excels in. Dark themes, emotional pain, strength in vulnerability – Skylar has repeatedly proved her mastery of this realm. And this particular song held a deeper significance for her than just a commission from a long-time collaborator.
She opened up about the process of the song creation on her Instagram, sharing the backstory:
I had bad writers block all of last year… I was banging my head against the wall trying to come up with anything worth a shit. Then out of nowhere, “Temporary” happened. I haven’t written much of anything worth a shit since. But if this is all I have to show for a year of effort, I’d say it was well worth the struggle. Incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with @eminem again, especially on a song as deeply personal as this. If you haven’t yet, peep the song we did together, “Temporary,” at the link in my bio. Sorry for the tears… but I promise they’re #temporary
