After months of quiet anticipation and vehement denial, the news is out: “8 Mile” can be revived in a new form.
The iconic hip hop movie celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022. Eminem re-released the official soundtrack for the movie and styled the New York Mom’s Spaghetti pop-up after “8 Mile”.
And then people started talking about, maybe, filming a sequel focused on B-Rabbit’s life of success. Artists involved in the creation of the classic movie didn’t support this notion. Meanwhile, Marshall did not comment on the situation at all, as usual.
And then, all of a sudden, Fifty makes this statement on air during his interview with Big Boy:
I’m gonna bring his “8 Mile” to television. It’s in motion. It’s gonna be big. I’m working. I ain’t got no duds. I’m batting a hundred. I think it should be there for his legacy. It’s important to me that they understand it. [Steve] Stout said [hip hop] was the tanning of America because America was listening to Black music. It’s really the culture losing its colour for everybody to feel like they can enjoy it and appreciate it because they see someone who’s accepted and respected, it makes them a part of it also.
The sentiment is clear but what about a storyline? Where a new “8 Mile” is going to take us? Fif has thought that through, of course.
It’s a modern version. Think the new version of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. I want to be able to show and offer a lot more details. Things that you would say in an interview or different things that you’ve already used, that you put out there. You’ll see these things surface. And the temperament of the characters.
That’s actually, an interesting idea, to use Marshall’s verbatim. He reveals so much of himself already that screenwriters do not even need to invent anything.
So, now we know that the show is in the works, Eminem knows about that and gave his blessing. Let’s see how it would turn out. Some fans are still slightly disappointed with Em’s short role in Fifty’s “BMF” show.
