Houston’s mayor acknowledges Fifty’s work in Texas and honours him with a key to the city.
Fifty publicly announced that he would leave his native New York back in 2020, appalled with the NY state taxation system. He didn’t want to pay and got ready to move down south in the case of Biden’s victory. True to his word, he made Texas his tax residency.
However, he did not just use the Texas tax heaven, he got involved in the life of his new home — Houston. Fifty launched apprenticeship and training programs in city high schools, partnered with local sporting teams, took part in business fairs, and overall eagerly embraced a new way of living. Even his traditional Thanksgiving food drive, when he would give out a turkey and festive meals to families in need, followed Fif from Bronx down south.
Fifty’s efforts were recognised by the city and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on the day of the traditional city Thanksgiving Day Parade. In a short speech, the mayor marked Fifty’s work towards bettering Houston:
He did not come here to live. He has been helping out on so many causes in this city — especially in our high schools, turning our high school students into entrepreneurs with his G-Unity program. This city has been elevated because of his presence and so today we have the honour of saying to him, he’s our 2022 Grand Marshal.
The mayor presented 50 Cent with a key to Houston and promised that all 550 administrative buildings in the city will open their doors to him always.
Fifty responded with dignity:
I just want to say it’s an honour to be here today. I’m really excited about being in Houston. Since I made my way out here, Houstonians have embraced me with open arms and it just feels like a great place for me to expand G-Unity as a foundation. I think the legacy is always people, so it’s exciting for me to make it to the next stage. Thank you.
Fif evidently appreciates the gesture and shared it on his social media widely. The most succinct is a post with the day recap you can see below:
